DLC Coating and Hard Coating Difference

The difference between DLC Coating and Hard Coating.

DLC film layer (diamond-like carbon film) and carbide coating is two different surface coating technology, they do not belong to the same kind of material, the main difference is as follows:

1. Material composition and structure:

DLC(Diamond-Like Carbon):

Composition: Mainly carbon (C), possibly mixed with small amounts of hydrogen (H), silicon (Si), or other non-metallic elements.

Structure: the structure of amorphous and nanocrystalline, a mixture of diamond and graphite.

Features: high hardness (about 2000-4000 HV), low friction coefficient (0.05 0.2), good wear resistance and chemical inertness.

Hard alloy film layers (such as tungsten carbide, titanium carbide, etc.):

Composition: It is mainly composed of metal carbides (such as WC, TiC), and is usually bonded and compounded with metals like cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni).
Structure: crystalline structure, with metal carbide hard particles and metal forming dense coating binding phase.
Features: high hardness(such as tungsten carbide can reach 1500-2000 HV) and high impact, high temperature resistant performance.

Application:

DLC Coating
: precision parts (such as engine piston ring, bearing), anti-friction tool, mold surface. Consumer electronics (mobile phone shell anti-scrape), medical device(Reduce biological friction).

Hard Coating: cutting tools (drill bits, milling cutter), stamping die, mining machinery wear-resistant parts. High temperature aerospace components (such as turbine blade coating).

Both confused reason is often mistaken for the same kind, mainly because: all belong to the category of "hard", used to improve the surface performance. Part of the composite coating technology will DLC with hard coating use (such as tungsten carbide first, and then coating DLC), multi-functional coating.

Conclusion: DLC film layer is not carbide film layer, the significant difference in composition, structure and application scenarios. DLC takes carbon-based amorphous structure as its core, focusing on reducing friction and wear resistance.
Hard alloy coating is mainly composed of metal carbides, emphasizing hardness and impact resistance.

When making a selection, it is necessary to match it based on specific working conditions (such as load, temperature, and friction environment).
